Kotsifou gorge with view of the sea

On Crete, Plakias is known as the place where the ☀️ always shines. Its unique geographic location, sheltered by high mountains, bless the area with an astonishing amount of sun hours. Even during the rainy days of winter, the skies are never completely covered by clouds.

Although the mountains keep the clouds from reaching Plakias, two impressive gorges allow the travelers to enter the valley. Also, by connecting two very different weather areas, these gorges help create the strong north winds, which Plakias is famous for.

The gorge of Kotsifou is the first gorge you pass on your way from Rethymno. It is formed between the peaks of Kouroupa ⛰️ (984 m) and Kryoneriti ⛰️ (1312 m). Like its bigger brother, the Kourtaliotis gorge to the East, the Kotsifou is loved for its rare bird sightings, hiking trails, and dramatic views.

The funnel-shaped connection between the north and the south coast starts it’s 10 m narrow entrance just after the tavern Iliomanolis in Kanevos - a “must-try” if you want an authentic Cretan 'eat what's cooking' experience! From there, the 1800 m long gorge gradually widens until it reaches a total width of 600 m at the crossroads for Selia and Myrthios. The mountain road that connects these villages offer a fantastic view on the south coast with Plakias at its center. 🌄

Close to the entrance of the Kostifou, the winter rain creates an impressive 20 m high waterfall. This temporary miracle of nature floods the higher levels of the riverbed at the top of the gorge that dries up again towards the summer.

From start to finish, the level drops an impressive 390 m, which, in ancient times, motivated the building of the now ruined watermills in the valley above Plakias.
