The Old Mill Hike – Easy Hiking For a Stunning View

The short walk from Plakias up to the village of Mirthios promises adventure, delicious Cretan food, and breath-taking views of Plakias and its surroundings! 😊
Luckily, the walk back down is doable in less than 20 minutes just by walking on the main road! 👣
One of our favorite attractions on this walk is the visit to the ruins of an old water-driven mill, situated near the exit of the Kotsifos gorge, below the village of Mirthios. 🤩

This so-called “Old Mill” is one of five mills, presumably built during the Venetian period. The mills were used to produce flour to supply nearby villages. It is believed that even people from the island of Gavdos would come here to have their grains milled. ⛵
The building is still in relatively good shape, and the top of the mill can be reached by walking up the little hill on the right, around the overgrowth of cacti plants. 🌵 When you reach the top, follow the aqueduct to the front of the mill and take a moment to enjoy the amazing view of Plakias!
The journey is not finished yet, though! From the “Old Mill” there should be a sign for Mirthios and some blue markings along the way that you can follow up to the village. 👣
When in Mirthios, take a well-deserved break at one of the restaurants along the main road. Both Panorama and Platia offer tasty Cretan tapas and a fantastic panorama view of the whole area! 😋
